Yesterday's charm @ Lone Pine Hotel Penang

Lone Pine @ Penang
SPONSORED REVIEW

The school holidays had passed.

It may be barely a week long, but that did not stop us from thinking about a trip. It was tough to make a decision where to go but Lone Pine Hotel made it easy with an invitation to Penang for a 2 nights stay.

Nested at the Batu Ferringhi , this charming iconic resort is well situated at Penang's popular beachfront strip. Founded in 1948, Lone Pine Hotel may be the oldest resort along the strip, but it has been updated while retaining the character and charm from the original Lone Pine Hotel.

Getting there from Penang International airport takes about 45 minutes. The airport provides taxi at a fixed rate of Myr $74 ( as of March 2015) to the airport. We are not quite sure if you can get there via the iconic Penang trishaw as it is quite a distance from the airport!
Welcome to Penang
Without further ado, let us bring you around Lone Pine Hotel to have a taste of what the only luxury boutique hotel in Batu Ferrenghi has to offer.

YESTERDAY'S CHARM, TODAY'S HOTEL
Original Lone Pine hotels
Lone Pine hotel consist of old and new buildings to bring you an old charm atmosphere infused together in a modern setup. The original 2 storey hotel still stands as a wing of Premier rooms. Assimilated into the property is an additional 50 rooms housed in a new building built in 2010.

The new and the old wings are clad in white and compliment each other in outlook. The general feel is one of colonial charm that is unseen in most modern hotel. Given the hotel is managed by E&O group that manages the famed Eastern and Oriental Hotel Penang, the old school magic is very much alive at Lone Pine hotel.

SALTED INFINITY POOL
Salted infinity pool @ Lone Pine Hotel
If you are looking for a place to unwind and relax. the salted infinity pool is the choice place to be in at the resort. There are 2 pools to choose from. The L shaped adult pool and the smaller children pool next to it.
Cabana
The pool comes with Cabana and bean bags for one to relax in.
Pool seats
There are plenty of seats for one to lay down and indulge in relaxation. Needless to say, this is the place we spend the most time in during our stay at Lone Pine Hotel.

Swimming for 3 hours is a daily affair for us.

LEPAK CORNER
Lepak corner
After a swim, it's time to kickback and relax. Head down to the Lepak(Hang out) corner, next to the reception to unwind. On one side there is a mahjong table set beside a small library. On the other side are couches for larger group gatherings. Board games or a game of Congkak are available from the reception.

GAMES ROOM

Feeling hot?

There is a cooler place to unwind. Head up to the air conditioned games room on the mezzanine floor.
Have a game of billiard, hone your carom skills, enjoy a game of play station or simply chill and watch TV to relax and unwind.

SPA
Pure energy
For a truly relaxing time, head down to the pure energy in house spa to unwind. We did gave that a miss, as with two young hyperactive kids in tow, a 2 hours time away from them is near impossible without supervision.

GYM
Gym
Those who love to keep fit no matter where you are, the well equipped gym at Lone Pine would suit your needs. Private trainers to whip you into shape are also available upon request.

THE BUNGLOW
The Bunglow
Food options within the resort are limited but sufficient. There are 2 restaurants to choose from.
The Bungalow provides Al Fresco dining by the beach. It has a delicious Buffet breakfast spread that includes the must try Penang Fried Kway Teow.
Penang Fried Kway Teow
The Bungalow continues to serve traditional favorites from colonial style burgers to local delight like satay.

Yummy... we say.
Satay
If you love Hainanese cuisines, don't miss their signature Hainanese dishes served throughout the day.

MATSU
Matse
Matsu is the alternate dining option serving authentic Japanese flavours. We were told that it is the favourite Japanese restaurant on Penang Island.

Matsu is located at level 2 , above Batubar.

BATUBAR
Batubar
Batubar is the residence chill out zone for adults. An evening drink in the bar with the latest chill tunes will be relaxing and therapeutic.

GERAI

Fancy picking up a few of Malaysian souvenirs during your stay?
Gerai or 'Little Shop' is the place to go for your shopping fix.
It is located just above the reception.

ACTIVITIES AROUND THE RESORT
  • Admire the 'Pine Trees'

The hotel name 'Lone Pine' was the result of the original owner, Dr Albert S. McKern mistaking a solitary casuarina tree he saw there as a pine tree and dubbed the property ‘Lone Pine’
In reality, that tree is a casuarina tree. Today casuarina trees surround the estate.Grab a seat and re-enact Lone Pine historical roots by admiring the 'Pine trees'.

  • Spot a Monkey
Monkey @ Lone Pine
If you are lucky, you might even spot a friendly neighbour at Lone Pine. We saw monkeys and squirrels enjoying the laid back surroundings of Lone Pine.
  • Witness a Wedding
Wedding @ Lone Pine
Saying 'I Do' with the sea at the background and underneath the giant casuarina tree is a romantic event that many dream of. During our short stay, we had seen wedding at the Gardens. Even Hongkong TVB immortalised this place on TV with a wedding scene for their series 'Outbound Love'
  • The Beach
The Beach
Right on the backyard of Lone Pine is a beautiful stretch of beach. The beach may not have the finest sands or the bluest water, but nonetheless it is gorgeous in her own ways.
Para-Sailing @ Lone Pine
At the beach, you can indulge in sea sports, para-sailing,massages and even horse rides. Swimming is secondary on the beach as there is only a small section allocated for this activity.

We think if the swimming area is larger, it will give the bigger Phuket or Bali beaches a run for their money.
Horse Riding @ Lone Pine
  • Relax
Relaxing
Sometimes the best holidays are holidays that you truly relax and do nothing.
Just lie down in the hammocks provided in the garden and witness the sunset. This is one of the best way to appreciate the beauty of relaxation.

  • Sunset
Sunset @ Lone Pine
Speaking of Sunset, Lone Pine location gives you one of the best sunsets in Penang. Since a picture tells a thousand words, we just let the above collage speak for itself.
  • Hawker Food and Pasar Malam
Hawker food
The location is not only great for sunset but it is probably the best to get close to the action in Batu Ferringhi. The nightly famed Pasar Malam is just right outside the gates of Lone Pine. Batu Ferringhi favourite hawker joint , Long Beach Hawker Center is just a few steps away. If you are a bona fide foodie, these cheap and good eats are a must try in Penang. Just in case, Mcdonald's is just across the street.
Time to go bro...
Planing your next holiday to Penang?

We highly recommend Lone Pine Hotel as your accommodation destination. We were so charmed by the surroundings that we decided to extend an extra night on our own accord. Sometimes it is worth it to pay for an additional day of bliss.

For a truly relaxing experience, Lone Pine Hotel is hard to beat.
