We didn't start the fire

Daily Dose: We didn't start the fire

We didn't start the fire
It was always burning since the world's been turning.
We didn't start the fire.
No, we didn't light it, but we tried to fight it

Fire seems to be the theme for this year. We are not talking about Billy.   Joel's song ( for old folks like us, you would know that it is), but rather the recent spate of fire incidents had literally raised the temperature on this.

Things start to heat from cars bursting into flames (2 BMW within a week) to house fire due to frying nuggets to fire to Lau Pa Sat over the weekend and Geylang Seria Market carpark up in Singapore. Add to the February and early March drought. It's a fiery quarter to remember.

Let's hope things cool down for the rest of the year.

1)13 Covid19 cases

13 imported

The anticipated CNY infection did not surface save for a handful of cases. This is good news for Singapore. It would seem like we had managed to keep it under control despite the daily imported cases.

  • 2 (Cases 60734 and 60752) are Singapore Permanent Residents who returned from India and Malaysia.
  • 1 (Case 60735) is a Dependant’s Pass holder who arrived from India.
  • 1 (Case 60738) is a Long-Term Visit Pass holder who arrived from India.
  • 1 (Case 60733) is a Work Pass holder who arrived from the The Philippines.
  • 7 are Work Permit holders who arrived from India, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines, of whom 5 (Cases 60748, 60753, 60755, 60757 and 60758) are foreign domestic workers.
  • 1 (Case 60739) is a Short-Term Visit Pass holder who arrived from India to visit her relative, who is a Singapore Permanent Resident.

2) Vaccination drive brought forward for seniors, extended to teachers, postman and migrant workers

As of Sunday, more than 596,000 doses have been administered, with 379,000 receiving the first dose. The earlier plan was for seniors (60-69) to get their first dose by the end-March. It has been brought forward to starting in a few days.

It will be quite a while before it reaches my turn...

5) Govt launches project to unite Singaporeans through football.

Phase 1 involves a standardised national curriculum, starting an elite youth league. The better way is to have more basketball courts or open spaces to play football if you ask us. When I was younger, we would play football on a school's basketball court or under the void deck whenever we have time. Nowadays, youngsters would prefer to play on the computer at home, especially if they are laden with homework and tuition. Moreover, the space for playing is rather limited.

Anyways, what's the obsession with football. Surely, there are other uniting sports/activities we can look into.
