Rode Videomicro + iPhone7 Plus : Best set up for youtube videos
You have to read this!
Recently , we had indulged in making videos for our Youtube channel - The Wacky Duo.
We had not been active on the channel, as we are more focus on this blog. Surprisingly our recent videos were well received. Our National Day feature on NDP funpack itself has 13000 views in less than 2 weeks . This had spur our vlog obsession as we added 4 more videos in less than 2 weeks!
However, we do admit the quality of our Youtube video could be improve. The video was good enough for youtube, but the audio was horrible. At some point during the video, it was a struggle to hear what is said. They say to make a good video, you need content AND a good audio recording. No point showing all the nice visuals but no one can hear you.
Our main equipment for videos are the iPhone 7 Plus and the OMD EM1
As a result, we decided to search for an external microphone to improve the audio quality of our videos. We had some basic criteria. Portability, usable for iPhone and Mirrorless cameras , easy to set up and affordable.
After some recent, we decided to purchase the Rode Videomicro.

This unit is small , especially without the Dead Kitten . It is lightweight too. Attached to the camera via hotshoe . As for the iPhone, you could invest in a portable rig to fit the Videomicro together with iPhone and voila, you have a portable video rig.

We are able to use the unit on both the iPhone and our main camera.

To use on the iPhone, we need an additional cable SC-7 to make it work.
