The Durian Bakery Review : Heavenly Durian Cakes and Pastries

We are bona fide durian fans.

Every year, during the durian season, we would be sure to head out to buy a couple of durians to satisfy our carving. However, as most of you know, the durian season is typically between June and September. Any time beyond that, we would have to dream about durians.

Then we discovered Durian Bakery!

Who is Durian Bakery?

The Durian Bakery is a homegrown brand.

According to their website, it was created by Chef Heng who had graduated from the famed Le Cordon Bleu 28 years ago. He was the Head Patissier of a local hotel, but due to COVID19, he was laid off. Using part of the severance package, he founded The Durian Bakery.

We were intrigued by his tale, but a quick search only provided this information. Nonetheless, 30 5 stars google reviews made us want to try the cakes for ourselves.

It's like a dream come true to be able to try out durian cakes from The Durian Bakery during the offseason. We had seen durian cakes in the past, but they sure do not look like the ones on The Durian Bakery!

There were a variety of cakes for you to choose from. From chocolate durian Cakes to durian cheesecakes, you will start salivating even before you see the actual cake. What caught our eye is the Mao Shan Wang Durian Mille Crepe Cake($88) and we added it to our cart without further ado. You could set up an account or simply order directly from the website. 2 hours delivery is possible, but we do recommend early delivery in case the cakes run out.

Mao Shan Wang Durian Mille Crepe Cake

This is the signature cake of The Durian Bakery.  Our first impression was wow!

The cake is about 8" and weighs 1kg. We were awestruck by the layers of crepe skin. There are a total of 39 layers on them comprising of 20 layers of thin handmade crepe skin and 19 layers of Durian Puree.

Should I peel it off?

We are so tempered to peel off each crepe piece by piece to eat them. However, the best way to enjoy this unique crepe cake is to cut them into slices like how you would with a cake. The cake is layered with Mao Shan Wang Durian Puree.

Layers of durian

We can that each bite is indeed heavenly. For durian lovers, you would love the texture and the mix in every bite. Do take note that these bake cakes are limited on a daily basis and would usually be sold out before the day ends. Also, each cake comes frozen which can be defrosted easily in the fridge before serving. Once defrosted, it can last for up to a day. Given the taste, we think it may not even last an hour for durian fanatics.

Worth every bite

Signature Pastries

Other than cakes, you should also try out the various pastries that are available on the website. There are durian cream puff, durian swiss rolls, durian Mochi, Black God Musang King Durian Mochi, Mousse, puddings and even macarons infused with Mao Shan Wang.

With so many options, it could be overwhelming. We opted for the Signature Pastries Taster Bundle($51.90)  This option comes with the following
  • 1 x box of 12 D24 Durian Choux Puff
  • 1 x box of 6 D24 Snowy Mochi
  • 1 x PC of Dark Coco MSW Moussee

Snowy D24 Cream Puff
The Snowy D24 cream puff resembles a normal cream puff on the outside but it is the fillings that made the difference. It is 100% durians fillings inside with almost zero cream. Filled with D25 Durain, you get to enjoy the bittersweet taste in each bite. It's just like eating durians with pastry!

Durian Mochi

Durian Mochi is the first for us. With over 1000 types of mochi in Japan, it is surprising that we had yet to try a Durian Mochi. It's worth the wait, especially when you taste the D24 fillings within the chewy Mochigome. With almost zero creams, each bite retains the familiar bittersweet taste of D24. We only wish we had ordered more!

Our Pièce de résistance would be the irresistible Dark Choco Musang King Mousse. Cut open this piece and immediately you notice the thick golden hues of Durian Puree. The Choco is made from specially imported Cacao Beans from Ivory Coast. Filled with MSW durians held with a layer of chocolate biscuit, this is indeed a divine treat.

You could choose 2 ways to eat it. Eat after thawing for 40-50 minutes where the fillings will melt and integrate with the chocolate, or eat after thawing for 20 minutes where the durian puree will have the texture of ice cream. Either way, we guarantee that you would be able to finish it in one setting!

The Durian Bakery Pastry

These durian treats are a feast for our mouths. It's a pity that we almost finish the lot within a day. Nonetheless, the next time we have a craving for durians, we would know where to head to!
