Singapore Art Museum : SAM @ Tanjong Pagar Distripark

Have you been to S.A.M.?

Singapore Arts Museum moved from Tanjong Pagar Distripark in 2023. Initially slanted to move earlier, it was derailed due to Covid. The previous location at Brash Basah is currently under renovation.

Tanjong Pagar Distripark is an interesting place. Home to art-related businesses such as art gallery 39+ Arts Space, art advisory Art Agenda and Art Auction houses 33 Auctions, it is an interesting place to be in.

The new space spans over 3000 sqm across two floors. Exhibitions change regularly at the main galleries, and the current main exhibitions are Lila: Unending Play by Jane Lee, SAM Contemporaries: Residues & Remixes, Hito Steyerl: Factory of the Sun.

Lila : Unending Play by Jane Lee
Until Sep 24

It is a visual feast for Lila: Unending Play

Your senses are alerted the moment you into the black tunnel of light.

In the next room, a large metallic sculpture greets you. "Hollow and Empty" is a beautiful reflective sculpture.

The Red "Status" is another impressive work that is a mix of red paint on luxurious textiles.

Other works include "The Object 1" and "The Object II".

SAM Contemporaries: Residues & Remixes
Until Sep 24

From afar, 'A Collisional Accelerator of Everydays (A.C.A.E) ', it looks like an imposing piece of art, look closer, and you will see familiar objects such as cups, toothbrushes, and chairs hanging.

The next room, you have 'a caveat, a score'

It's an interesting collection of sculptures moulded with polymer clay, objects, and furniture.

There is a room behind, and the first thing you will see are swords standing on attention. Named 'From Silver to Steel', it reflects on the exploitation and weaponisation of this raw material.

Further in, you have 'Landscape Palimsest', a collection of layered and suspended buildings.

In the middle of the room is a tent. This is LAMENT H.E.A.T, a multi-media installation.

There is also an art installation on the 3rd floor accessible only from the exterior of the building facing the port. This is an augmented reality sequence that depicts a monumental black block.

Hito Steyerl: Factory of the Sun

It feels like Tron the moment you step into the room.
