Silks Place Tainan Review : Junior Family Suite
Tainan is known as Taiwan's cultural capital.
Boasting the distinction of being the island's oldest city, it carries a rich history spanning more than four centuries. Traces of Dutch colonization, the enduring legacy of the Qing dynasty, and the imprint of Japanese rule can be found within this city. A mere 1.5-hour journey via the High-Speed Rail from Taipei transports you to this historical haven, making it a must-visit destination for those eager to delve into cultural heritage with a few nights' stay.

It is a buffet set up with a combination of Western delights and some local dishes.
Tainan Beef Soup |
We recommend trying the Tainan beef noodles.
Plenty of space to sit, but a place by the window would be great if you are in a group.
Western Buffet at Robin's Grill |
Alternatively, head to the 4F Banquet rooms for traditional Tainan dishes. We heard the choices there were as delightful, if not better, for those who prefer Chinese food.

Robin's Teppanyaki (1F)
We had the pleasure of dining at Robin's Teppanyaki for dinner. Our dinner was in a private room that had exposed red bricks, giving it an industrial vibe. Dinner was the Teppanyaki Suumer Set Menu with prices starting from NT $2580.
Robin's Teppanyaki |
The main dishes were prepared and presented by the chef and team in front of you.
Dare to try seahorse? |
The appetisers were Atu Fried Fish, Marinated Tuna and a Seahorse. I was apprehensive about the Seshorse since it was my first time trying out one. Interesting, it was crunchy without much meat in it. Not too bad, I have to add.
Other dishes we had were Abalone with King Oyster Mushroom, Mud Eel with Butter and Mashed Yam.
The main one we chose was the Iberico Cap 4 oz which was surprisingly tender.
Iberico |
The chef put on a show with the Eel with Sansho Fried Rice. Eating Teppanyaki is akin to enjoying a show, as you can see from how the chef made the rice.
The Fried Rice was as delicious as it looks.
After a few more dishes, it is safe to say that we had our fill.
Other than the meal, you have access to the salad bar and dessert station, ala carte buffet style.

T-BAR at MRLC
Build in 1900 |
T-Bar is co-run by the Silks Group. While you are exploring the cultural side of Tainan, why not drop by The Old Tainan Magistrate Residence?
Exploring Cultural side of Tainan |
The Old Tainan Magistrate Residence is a historical residence with roots in the Empire of Japan.
Old Magistrate Residence |
Originally built in 1900 as a residence for Tainan Governor Ima Konicihi, it has seen various transitions, including a concert hall. The building itself retains the original facade of the past with English colonial architectural references.
Shop at MRLC |
Today, it is known as Magistrate Residence Living Center (MRLC), which houses exhibitions, a store and T-bar. An interesting place to visit, given its historical significance and architectural design.

Verdict
To be honest, we did not expect Tainan to be such a vibrant city. From its cultural heritage to unique bars to street food, it has a different feel to Taipei. While Taipei is more modernised, Tainan is more old school.
