Mr and Mrs Mohgan Super Crispy Roti Prata Review: Worth the wait?

It may take up to 90 minutes to get your hands on these legendary crispy prata.

The question though ... is it worth the wait?

It has been 6 years since Mr and Mrs Moghan Prata moved to Tin Yeang Restaurant at Joo Chiat in 2018. Helmed by a husband and wife team, they had been churning out crispy prata for years. During this period, they had to face COVID and the passing of Mr Moghan. Mrs Moghan continues to hold the fort and crowds continue to support them to this day through the tribulations.

Despite being a regular patron of food outlets in Joo Chiat for years, last weekend was the first time I had tried the prata at Mrs Mohgan. I wanted to do so for a long time, but the long queue and wait for prata had deterred me in the past. Finally, I sacrificed sleep to try these prata that had now attained legendary status in Singapore.

Mr and Mrs Morgan Prata is famed for their Crispy Prata, which comes in three main variations – Kosong, Egg and Coin. I had the first two variations.

Kosong Prata ($1.5)

If there is a standard for crispiness in plain prata, Mr and Mrs Moghan take the cake. This is the crispiest prata I have tried.

The dough is not too hard and you can feel the buttery crunchiness inside your mouth. While crispy on the outside, it retains its fluffiness within. It’s a good mix of flavour and texture. We paired it with fish curry, and it was decent. I would prefer mutton curry as I feel it adds a bit more flavour to the dish. To fully enjoy this dish, we do recommend eating at the coffee shop when it is still heated for that extra oomph.

Egg Prata ($2)

As for the egg prata, it is less crispy than the kosong prata. Mainly because of the way to cook it. If you want egg prata, we highly recommend choosing the Plaster instead as it is essentially Kosong Prata with an eff cooked on the outside instead of mixed in the dough. That way, you could still enjoy the crispiness of the prata for the egg version.

Verdict

While we were there early and managed to get our prata within 30 minutes, we did see scores of people waiting for their fix. If you plan to have your meal there, do go there early for a seat. If you are tabaoing instead, you probably would experience a different back home.

In any case, should I get craving for it, I know I must sacrifice sleep once more.
