Khao Hom by Rung Mama - Katong Square : Authentic Thai Restaurant
Thai Food is always one of our favourite cuisine for a meal out.
It is no surprise for us to explore new places to whet our appettite
We had spotted Khao Hom by Rung Mama at Katong Square some time back. We hesitate to try as restaurants at Katong Square are not exactly known for its longevity. Last weekend was an exception, since we were at i12 Katong for a movie and was craving for Thai food.
It turned out to be a great decision.
The Venue
Tucked away on the ground floor, Khao Hom by Rung Mama at Katong Square has a large sitting area. We were there around 6.30pm and there was no crowd... yet. By 7pm, the restaurant was packed. This was a surprise as we usually do not experience such dinner crowd at Katong Square.

Interesting, we wonder who Rung Mama is . Turns out Khao Hom was started by a Thai Lady using recipes from 'Rung Mama' who is her Mother. Hence the name.
What we ate
![]() |
We ordered 4 different dishes for the evening.
Moo Ping (Pork Skewers)$12
![]() |
For starters we had the Moo Ping. It comes in on a plate of five generous size pork on skewers. Do not be fooled by the photos on the menu, this is much bigger than we thought and makes a heart starter. On that note, the serving portion per dish is rather big. For 2, 3 dishes and dessert will do just fine.
Fried Pork Jowl with Homemade Sauce $18
![]() |
Our main dish was the fried Pork Jowl. The Pork Jowl was crispy and crunchy. However, in comparison with the Pork Skewers, the meat is not as flavorful with most of the taste originating from the batter. To be fair, we were probably overwhelmed by the Pork Skewers to make a fair comparison.
Stir Fried Water Spinach $12
![]() |
The Water Spinach or KangKong was fresh and tasty. It's cooked well without being too salty or chewy.
Thai Suki w Vermicelli $18
![]() |
If you like sourish soup, you would love this. We had this with chicken and it was divine. Usually, we would choose green curry for soup. With this on the menu, I think this will be our goto soup in the future.
Lemongrass and Thai Milk Tea
![]() |
For drinks we have the Lemongrass and Thai Milk Tea. Taste wise, it is within expectation.
Verdict
This was one of the better Thai restaurant we had been too. Each dish was bursting with flavours. Given the crowd we seen, I think it is safe to say that this is a popular place. There are 2 more branches at Ang Mo Kio and Novena.
It has an extensive menu, so we will be back for more!
