Top Visitors to Singapore: A Look at Luxury Travel Trends

Singapore experienced a remarkable resurgence in tourism in 2023, welcoming over 13 million international visitors.

This figure represents more than a twofold increase from 2022, signaling a robust recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic's impact. The influx of tourists to the "Garden City" has injected vital energy into Singapore's economy, providing a much-needed boost after years of travel restrictions. Let’s explore what this means.

Which Are the Key Nationalities Visiting Singapore?

With high spending from Singapore’s key markets, Indonesia (2.3 million visitors), China (1.4 million visitors), and Malaysia (1.1 million visitors), it’s no surprise that this has led to a boost in tourism.

There has also been a strong recovery from countries outside of Asia, with Australian, American, and British visitors totaling around 2.2 million visitors in 2023 alone.

Indonesia

With fewer visitors arriving in Singapore from China, Indonesia took the top spot as Singapore’s biggest inbound travel market in 2023, with over 2 million visitors. This is almost three times the number of visitors who made the same trip in 2022. Indonesians continue to flock to the city-state to visit family members and enjoy a wide array of leisure activities. The short flight time and luxurious hotels make it an increasingly attractive proposition for wealthy Indonesians who like utilizing a private plane.

India

The year 2023 saw a 64.7% increase in visitors arriving in Singapore from India from the previous year. A significant contributor to the country is the cruise sector’s recovery, which has long been popular with the Indian market. While not yet at pre-COVID levels, international cruise passenger numbers have risen from 543,387 in 2022 to 1.04 million in 2023. One report also points to coordinated and targeted campaigns by Disney Cruise Lines, Scoot, Mandai Wildlife Group, and The Sentosa Development Corporation as responsible for this surge.

Malaysia

After the borders between the two countries were closed between 2020 and 2022, there has been a huge uptick in visitors from Malaysia to Singapore. More travelers from Malaysia came to visit friends and family in 2019 than any other country, with 29% of all tourists from Malaysia catching up with loved ones. Despite unfavorable currency conversion, a growing population of affluent Malaysians indicates that these numbers will continue to grow over the coming years.

China

Despite over 1 million visitors from China in 2023, no country has seen a more significant decline in tourists to the “Lion City”. This decline in tourism to Singapore has multiple factors, namely higher post-COVID airfares, an appreciation of the Singapore dollar, and an  economy that has slowed down significantly in recent years. Despite this, the tourist board insists that the country’s reputation as a safe destination with world-class hotels will encourage a Chinese resurgence, especially as a MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing & exhibitions) destination.

Australia

Like Indonesia, Australia has seen the number of visitors to Indonesia skyrocket during the post-COVID period. 2023 produced a 117% increase in visitors, with many of them opting to stay for three or four days during their layovers instead of using Singapore purely as a transport hub. The average length of stay for visitors has consistently been around 3.79 days, which, according to Statistica, is in line with pre-COVID numbers.

From Transport Hub to Tourist Hotspot

So, why the sudden surge in visitors? Singapore saw a steady increase in tourism before the pandemic for several reasons. Despite its long history as a Southeast Asian transport hub, it was never really a destination in its own right. However, that’s changed dramatically in recent years, with sizeable investments transforming Singapore into an eco, entertainment, dining, and gaming icon in the East.

Singapore’s number one tourist attraction, Gardens by the Bay, has attracted over 50 million visitors since opening in 2012. Since first hosting the F1 race in 2008, Singapore has also been one of the most hotly anticipated dates on the calendar. The event has attracted over half a million additional tourists since its launch, and hoteliers and F&B outlets regularly report upticks in business when the event takes place.

What Type of Traveler Is Visiting Singapore?

Tourism receipts quickly confirm Singapore’s luxury reputation over the past few years. Cruises and accommodation produced 56% of all tourism receipts in 2022, with shopping at 19%. Most of this spending comes from Singapore’s most popular markets, Indonesia, India, and Australia. What this tells us is that Singapore has developed a reputation as a playground for Asia’s wealthiest nationals. Its accessibility, proximity, and high reputation for safety and security make it the premier destination to fly in on a private plane for a long weekend to spend money on hotels, experiences, and fine dining.

What Does It All Mean?

Despite the huge hit that Singapore — like the resort of the world — suffered due to COVID- 19, it’s clear that it’s back on the map as one of the world’s premier tourist destinations. All key indicators provide a positive look at the contribution of tourism to the economy despite a decrease in Chinese tourism. All this looks set to continue with more expected funding earmarked for hotels, experiences, and cruising on this compact yet dazzling destination.
