Within the Wall Dessert Bar: Inspired by the infamous Kowloon Walled City

Once in a while during our #hungrywackyeats escapades, we would discover a hidden gem. This is one of those times.

We spotted this row of lanterns along East Coast Road. Lined up behind the lanterns are a row of restaurants. Since we already had our meal, we decided to check out Within the Wall Dessert Bar for desserts.

Within the Wall Dessert Bar

When one thinks of the now-defunct Kowloon Walled City, we would no doubt be inspired by its dystopia status embedded in many Hong Kong movies.

What struck me was the run-down, retro industrial outlook that is the signature of Kowloon Walled City.

Within the Wall Dessert Bar spares no effort in recreating the same atmosphere with its unfinished concrete walls, neon lights, retro decor and walls with Hong Kong Starts from the 90s and beyond.

There are inside and outside seating and we recommend sitting inside.

One of the perks of sitting inside would be enjoying the live performances at certain times. This is not your usual dessert place where you just go and indulge in desserts.

The Dessert

Within the Walls serves up hot and cold desserts. We loved it so much the first time that we made a repeated visit on another day for more. These are what we had over 2 days.

MSW Durian Chendol with Vanilla Ice Cream ($.9.9)

The MSW Durian Chendol was a delight. Its paste is thick and creamy with bits of MSW Durian. If you are a durian fan, you will like this.

Mango Ice ($14.80)

Shaved Ice Desserts are Within the Walls; speciality. These Ice Desserts are made with real fruits. We chose the Mango Bo Jio. It's super sweet but refreshing at the same time. At the price point, we do feel that it is a little pricey compared to other places.

Orh Nee ($7.90)

The Hot Desserts are above average. The Orh Nee or Yam Paste is thick and flavourful.

Purple Rice with taro balls ($6.30)

The Purple Rice or Pulat Hitam was neither thick nor watery. It's flavourful, but we would have liked it if it was warmer.

Bar Bites

Because we enjoyed the vibes and the free live entertainment, we decided to stick around for more with some bar bites.

Truffle Shrimp Balls ($14.80)

The Truffle Shrimp balls were a first for us. Crunchy and tasty but a little pricey.

Chicken Wings ($14.80)

Chicken wings are fried to a crisp. Nice. and tasty. 6 pieces are priced at $14.80

Verdict

Within the Walls is an unexpected surprise find. We love the dystopia vibes, dessert quality, and casual live performances.

Hot and cold desserts are priced below $10 with Ice Desserts around $14.90. Bar Bites range from $7.90 to $14.80 depending on order. GST and Service charges are chargeable. It's not the cheapest but for the ambience, it is worth a try.

This is now our favourite Dessert Place along East Coast Road. We will definitely be back for more.
