When it comes to traditional desserts in Singapore,
Mei Heong Yuen Dessert in
Chinatown is practically a household name.
With over 2,800 reviews and an
almost always-packed storefront, this spot has become a must-visit for both
locals and tourists craving something sweet with a nostalgic twist. While
there are different branches across the island, the OG will be the one to try
to savour the original taste. It is also recognised as one of " Singapore
Chinatown Heritage Brand" by Chinatown Business Association.
🏠 The Place
Finding this place is a breeze. Just
exit Chinatown MRT from Exit A, turn right and walk straight. In less than two minutes, you’ll spot a dessert shop that's almost always got a
queue outside, a good sign you’re at the right place.
Despite the crowd,
the line mov
es quickly
thanks to the shop spanning
three connected shophouse units. Look out for the simple but classic signboard. Inside, it’s
functional and fuss-free—perfect for a quick, satisfying dessert
stop.
🍧 The Food
Mei Heong Yuen offers a wide selection of
hot and cold traditional Chinese desserts, plus a few savoury bites if you’re peckish. While the traditional
Chinese Desserts are worth a try, we decided to get the cold dessert
instead, as we were enticed by the many creative options like
Peanut Ice and Watermelon Lychee Ice
🖤 Almond Sesame Ice
This one resembles a yin-yang symbol, and it delivers balance in
both appearance and taste. Instead of coarse ice, the
shaved ice is ultra-fine and creamy, almost like powdered snow that melts gently on the tongue. The
nutty almond blends beautifully with the rich, earthy black sesame.
A sprinkling of roasted nuts on the side adds crunch and contrast.
It’s a dessert that’s
both comforting and uniquely indulgent.
💚 Pandan Mango Roll
This was a
seasonal special not
on the usual menu, and we’re glad we caught it. The
pandan "skin" was soft and fragrant, wrapping around fresh, juicy mango slices. My partner loved the
mango, I loved the pandan… but together? A match made in dessert
heaven.
✅ Verdict
With so many desserts still unexplored on the menu, this
definitely won’t be our last visit. Whether you’re after something cooling on a hot day or just want
to relive the flavours of old-school sweets,
Mei Heong Yuen Dessert
is a place you’ll want to come back to again and again.
We’ll be back for more!
