Chongqing Grilled Fish Bugis – Buffet That Will Set Your Tummy on Fire

Liang Seah Street is quickly becoming Little China

Every corner seems to sprout a new restaurant flying the flag of a different province. Our latest adventure brought us to Chongqing Grilled Fish Bugis, the place that proudly carries the torch for fiery Chongqing cuisine.

The interior

Think Taobao showroom meets marble obsession. Flashy, shiny, and maybe a little too polished, but hey, it works. There’s indoor and outdoor seating (weekends get crowded), plus VIP rooms if you want to feel important while sweating buckets from chilli overload.

We originally came for their famous grilled fish. Then we spotted the buffet, $43.80 on weekends ($38.80 on weekdays) and quickly changed course. Since a single fish already costs over $40, the buffet felt like a no-brainer. Just note, the spread is strictly Chongqing-style; no sweet-sour zi char basics here.

Here’s what we got ourselves into:

Fresh Chilli Sea Bass with Chinese cabbage and leaf lettuce

Fresh, not overwhelmingly spicy, with the familiar hotpot-style broth that defines Chongqing cuisine.

Sliced Pork Belly with Spicy Garlic Sauce

The challenge of the night. Bold, punchy, and so fiery it could challenge even seasoned chilli lovers. Be warned, your tummy might protest later.

Century Egg with Chopped Green Chilli
A dish that will split opinions. If you’re a fan of century eggs, this will be your thing.

Sweet and Sour Pork with Lychee

Crispy, tangy, with a refreshing burst of lychee. Easily one of the best versions of this dish we’ve had.

Salted Egg Mantou

Deep-fried mantou with salted egg coating. Simple but addictive.

Ice Jelly with Osmanthus Rice Wine

The perfect cool-down after all that heat. Refreshing and soothing.

    Verdict

If you’re a fan of bold, unapologetically spicy food, Chongqing Grilled Fish Bugis will feel like a playground.

The buffet is solid value and gives you more than just the fish.

Just one warning: if your tummy isn’t spice-trained, be prepared for a few acrobatics later. Ours certainly did a couple of somersaults. Even if you are not into spicy food, you would be able to find an interesting place to dine at Little China.
