Food Review: Old Bibik’s Peranakan Kitchen at Joo Chiat Road

Established in 2010, Old Bibik’s Peranakan Kitchen started as a modest hawker stall before expanding into a full-fledged restaurant. Joo Chiat has long been celebrated as the cultural heartland of Singapore’s Peranakan community, lined with historic shophouses, ornate tiles, and deep-rooted culinary traditions.

Situated right along Joo Chiat Road, Old Bibik's fits seamlessly into this historic neighbourhood, serving up home-style Nonya recipes that honour heritage while keeping dishes accessible and 100% Halal-certified.

The Interior & Ambience

Stepping inside Old Bibik’s feels like entering an 80s Kopitiam. The dining space features classic marble-top round tables paired with dark wooden chairs, intricate black-and-white patterned floor tiles, and vibrant Peranakan floral ceramic tiles along the service counter.

It may have a short history, but the vintage decor does add to the vibe.

To start our meal, we were welcomed with a complimentary bowl of crispy crackers (keropok). Light, crunchy, and airy, they served as the perfect appetiser while we waited for our main dishes to arrive.

Here is a breakdown of what we ordered and our verdict on each item:

Signature Beef Rendang $19

A quintessential Nyonya staple, Old Bibik's Beef Rendang features thick, tender chunks of beef slow-cooked in a rich blend of aromatics, coconut milk, and spices. The gravy is deeply savoury, with a robust spice profile, making it a must-order with rice.

Ayam Buah Keluak $18

This classic Peranakan chicken dish is rich, dark, and intensely flavorful. The earthy, slightly bitter nuttiness of the buah keluak blends wonderfully with the savoury gravy. Fresh parsley adds a bright touch on top, and the gravy begs to be drizzled over a hot bowl of rice.

We had tried many variations on this street, and this version best agrees with our palate.

Crispy Chinchalok Omelette $18

Arriving as a massive, golden disk, this fluffy and extra-crispy omelette is cooked to perfection. It has a wonderfully crunchy lattice texture on the outside while remaining moist on the inside, cooked with fermented shrimp and vegetables.

To be honest, this is too big for 2. With this and another main dish, it will already be a fulfilling meal.

Nyonya Achar $9

Served in a charming rooster bowl, this refreshing bowl of pickled vegetables—carrots, cucumbers, and pineapple—is tossed with crushed peanuts and sesame seeds. It delivers a sweet, tangy, and mildly spicy crunch that balances the rich coconut and spice-heavy mains.

Get either this or Nyonya Chap Chye to complete the meal.

Butterfly Pea Blue Rice  $1.8 per bowl

Add this to your meal. This fragrant rice goes very well with the dishes.

The Verdict

Old Bibik’s Peranakan Kitchen delivers comfort food at its best. By balancing traditional, hearty flavours with a welcoming ambience and Halal-friendly menu options, it continues to stand out along the bustling food street of Joo Chiat.

Will We Be Back?

Absolutely! Whether you are bringing overseas friends to taste authentic Peranakan flavours or looking for a comforting family meal on a weekend night, Old Bibik’s hits all the right notes. We will definitely be back for another round of their crunchy Telur Dadar and rich Beef Rendang!
