Sister Act opens in Singapore! (Preview)

Sister Act - The Musical (Singapore)
You know you make me wanna shout

Kick my heels up and shout
Throw my hands up and Shout
Throw my head back and Shout

The first time I heard the song was back in 1992 on the big screen while watching Sister Act. It was a song that made me wanna Shout with glee especially with the musical undertones that defined the movie. Hearing I will follow him sang with gusto is what kept movie musicals on my radar from then onward.

Dene Hill as Dleoris
Fast forward 2017, a good 25 years since the movie debut. Sister Act has landed on the shores of Singapore in a different form with the courtesy of Base Entertainment Asia. Straight from the USA, Sister Act the musical promises an evening of ridiculous fun with original music by 8 times Oscar winner Alan Menken ( Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Little shop of horror).
Rebecca Mason-Wyga as Mother Superior
If you have not watched the original movie, here is what you can expect from the musical. The musical is an adaption from the movie with a similar storyline. The original movie lead, Whoopi Golberg who played the lead role of Deloris, had a hand in the original Sister Act musical as a producer. This definitely added street cred to the production

Synopsis (Source)
SISTER ACT tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look-a convent! Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, SISTER ACT is a reason to REJOICE!

We had the privilege of attending a press call where we get to catch 2 songs from the musical.

Brandon Godfrey as Curtis Jackson
Brandon Godfrey who plays Curtis Jackson ( gangster boyfriend of Deloris ) kicked off the preview with a booming voice in a jazzy scene with his crew. His performance in When I find my baby was polished with a commanding stage presence. It was only a glimpse, but his stage presence was commanding.

For those who watched Sister Act will know the main stars of the show are the Deloris and the Sisters. Prominent roles include Deloris (Dene Hill), Mother Superior (Rebecca Mason-Wygal) , Sister Mary Roberts (Sophie Kim) and Sister Mary Patrick (Emma Brock). Our second song was the finale ' Spread the Love around ' that featured the Sisters in action. The song sparkled in performance and glittered in glitz. Combined with fabulous costume changes and a shimmering Mary statue, it brought the stage to life.

Spread the Love Around - Sister Act Singapore
For a fan of the original movie, it was a tad sad to not hear the original movie soundtrack in this Broadway adaptation. The new original musical scores might take a while to get used to for fans of the movie but they are catchy in their own right. For those new to the show, it will be an experience that could lead you dancing and singing at the end of the musical. Re-watching the movie live on stage does give one a refreshing take on Sister Act. It made us want to re-watch the movie again!
