The Stage is Alive with The Sound of Music : 5 Reasons why this musical is our favourite thing

Do you know your Do-Re-Mi?

Do- A deer, a female deer
Re- A drop of golden sun
Mi- A name I call myself
Fa- A long, long way to run
So- A needle pulling thread
La- A note to follow so
Te- A drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to Do, oh, oh, oh

The Sound of Music returns descends from the hills and onto the sunny shores of Singapore once more. This is the 2nd time Von Trapp family entertain Singapore with the familiar tunes that every adult and child are familiar with. After catching the gala performance, we think that this sophomore effort is to be the best musical in Singapore for 2017.

Here are 5 reasons why it should deserve this accolade.

1 The music inspires the popular movie classic - The Sound of Music
The Sound of Music

Watch the musical that inspired the famous classic movie of the same namesake.  Many have probably watched the reruns of the 1965 movie but have not to experience the 1959 musical. To see the popular classic comes alive on stage is a surreal experience to behold.

Since the movie adapted closely to the musical, it will not be surprising to see familiar scenes from the movies on stage. From the clothes made from curtains to the song Do-Re-Mi, these scenes evoke a sense of nostalgia throughout the musical.

2 The amazing culturally diverse Von Trapp children
The Von Trapp Family
The beauty of The Sound of Music musical is the way they incorporate little local talents to be part of the musical. 6 out of 7 children are picked from local auditions to be part of the Von Trapp Family. Despite their age, it was a cherry performance by the young artists. In total there are 18 Singapore's most able young actors and actress that play the coveted roles on a rotation basis.
Von Trapp Children
The cultural diversity was apparent in the casting. This diversity in the casting showed that music transcends all races. Everyone can enjoy what The Sound of Music brings to the stage.

The Von Trapp children were a crowd favourite too. Not only did it captured the attention of the adults, but kids in the audience also proclaim their performance as their favourite segment in the show. Our favourite performances are the well-choreographed  Do-Re-Mi and Farewell, Good Bye

3 Familiar tunes that you can sing along
Do-Re-Mi
Do not be a surprised if the audience next to you starts to belt out Do-Re-Mi. This infectious tune would be stuck on your head throughout the musical. Along with familiar tunes such as The Sound of Music, Climb Every Mountain and So Long, Farewell, it will be hard not to sing along with the cast in this uplifting musical

4 Boardway at your doorsteps
Jannel Visage as Mother Abbess
The Sound of Music will probably be our favourite thing in the musical arena for 2017. The performance was simply outstanding. Carmen Pretorius shines as Maria Rainer with her angelic voice that makes you want to climb mountains while Janelle Visage probably gave the best vocal performance for the evening for her opera-like rendition of Climb Every Mountain. Other cast members put up a credible showing, but it was no doubt that the Von Trapp children were the crowd favourite for the evening.

The cast for Gala Night
Each performance was tight and the pace of the story was right on cue.  The fantastic cast together with the Live musicians calibrated efficiently for a crisp and clear performance. You need not head to Boardway to watch this Tony Award winner for Best Musical. Rogers and Hammerstein most popular music are just at your doorsteps at Marina Bay Sands.

You do not need to climb over the mountains to get a seat at this musical. As long as you are in town from Nov 9- Dec 3, simply head here to book your tickets.

5 Family Friendly musical
Cast of all ages
Lastly, a musical that has a cast member as young as 7 is bound to appeal to children. If you want your children to experience world-class musicals, The Sound of Music will be a great introduction to the world of Boardway and West End Theatre.  Relive your childhood with familiar tunes and share this experience with the next generation to keep this classic alive. We recommend watching the rerun of The Sound of Music before attending the show to enhance the experience.

For dads, do not miss the scene in the garden where Captain Von Trapp discard his harden discipline self and sings with his children. It bought a tear to Daddy's eye!

Another tip for enhancing the experience. Choose the centre seats if possible. Seats on the extreme left and right will have the views partially block in a few segments during the show.
A special thanks to Base Entertainment Asia for the media invitation. You can always trust them to bring the best-curated shows to town. The show was so good that it was hard for us to say,

'So Long, Farewell!'
