Perseids Meteor Shower tonight (12 Aug)

Get set to star graze tonight.

After seeing so many 5 stars and a moon over the weekend (aka Singapore flags waving during National Day), you will get a chance to witness the Perseids Meteor Shower tonight.

The show will last from 12th Aug to 13 Aug. The direction to observe will be towards North Eastern Sky and the time to see would be from 230am onwards according to Stargazing Singapore.

The Perseids originate from the comet Swift-Tuttle. The Perseids meteor showers are one of the brightest meteor showers that occur annually between July 17 - Aug 24. The peak activity for this year would be from 12-13 August. During the peak, the rate of meteors reached 60 or more per hour and can be seen all across the sky. Not to worry, most Perseids burn up in the atmosphere while at heights above 80 kilometres.

In Singapore, Perseids will not appear as a shower but you will catch them coming in 1 by 1. If you are lucky, you might even catch a fireball. No special equipment is needed, just lots of patience.

If you intend to catch them, make sure your point of view is unblocked. Stay away from trees and buildings. Some popular spots to watch them are at

  • Ang Mo Kio-Bishan Park
  • Changi Beach
  • East Coast Park
Best time to watch: From 1 am onwards
Direction : North Eastern Sky
