Are you an açaí fan?

We had always wanted to try açaí bowl for the longest time. However, since we started a keto diet, having a sweet treat was not on our radar. However, we had since switched to a low carbs diet and am constantly on the lookout for low carbs meals to add to our diet.

Thus when Best in Singapore suggested The Açaí  Lab for a collaboration, we decided this is the perfect opportunity to try Açaí and see if it will be suitable for a low carbs diet.

What is açaí?

Açaí is found on açaí palm trees, Euterpe oleracea.  It is often touted as a superfood that aids anti-ageing and weight loss. It is rich in antioxidants, full of fibre and a source of omega 3 fatty acids.

Despite the ingredients,  açaí is not scientifically proven to be the purple gold that solves all health issues. Nonetheless, maintaining a diet that is rich in fruits has certain benefits for the heart, cholesterol, weight loss and anti-ageing.

There are a few açaí speciality outlets in Singapore, the latest entree is The Açaí  Lab. It proclaims to be the first and only açaí delivery specialist in Singapore. Having a fuss-free experience or getting an açaí bowl online and having it delivered to you beats staying in the queues and having to eat it on the go.

The Açaí  Lab promises to deliver in 60 minutes with fresh ingredients. They can do so as they have 7 specialised kitchens located around Singapore. Their unique selling point is their special blend of açaí puree - The Purple Blend

Can you guess the flavours?

There are 5 different speciality bowls that you can order from The Açaí  Lab. If you are planning an açaí party, the range should satisfy most açaí fans. The prices range from $9 and above for medium size bowls to $12.90 and above for large size bowls. You can customise your bowls with add on drizzles such as Nutella or honey, superfoods like chia seeds and summer foods like a kiwi for an extra $1 per add on.

For those who are more adventurous, you can create your own Açaí bowl to suit your taste too. There is a DIY option available on the website.

This bowl is the one that wants to experience everything in one shot.

The Signature Açaí Bowl is served with a whopping 10 most popular toppings.  This makes every bite flavourful. It comes with Açaí with granola, banana, strawberry, blueberry, kiwi, raisin, pumpkin seed, coconut flake, cranberry, chia seed.

Berry Berries (Starts from $10.10)

Berry Berries

This is a refreshing treat for those who wish to load themselves with all the antioxidants you need. The base for this is the Special Açaí Mango that adds more sweetness to the bowl that has granola, blueberries, raisins and almonds in the mix.

Fruity Delight ( From $9.80)

Tutti Frutti, Oh Rootie.

Having this bowl of fruity delights would make one break out in a song. Comprising of Mango, Kiwi and Blueberry, the 3 fruits would make a naturally sweet treat. It is topped with Almonds and Coconut Flakes to add more crunch to each bite.

Nutty Nature (From $8.90)

Get Nuttt with Nutty Nature, a blend of different dried fruits, berries and nuts. You have fresh cut kiwis with bananas, topped with blueberries. For those who wish to have a balanced taste of sweet and sour, this bowl will be refreshing from the normal sweet base Açaí bowls. Pumpkin seeds, mixed nuts and goji berries are included to add nuttiness to this bowl.

Tropical Acai (Form $9)

The last flavour is a blast of freshness. Packed with seasonal fruits such as pineapple, banana, mango, raisin, coconut flakes, walnut, cranberries, chia seed. The refreshing bowl has enough goodness to make you feel like you are in the Caribbean!

Açaí Puree (From $14.12)

Want to make your own Açaí Bowl, you can get to enjoy fresh, chilled Açaí Bowl at any time with a pint of Açaí Puree. The Açaí Puree comes in 2 sizes, medium or large. The Puree looks creamy and thick. The only gripe we have is that it does not come in the same container as shown on the website.

Verdict

The Purpleblend lives up to the expectation. The secret to a good Açaí bowl is the base, and The Açaí Lab serves up Purple Gold. Add fresh fruits and a whole host of Superfood such as Chia seed to the mix, and you will get a delightful sweet treat that is manageable on the carbs count. 

We had the medium size bowls. The size is similar to 3/4 pint of Ben and Jerry Ice cream, just enough for a meal.

It is touted to be keto-friendly, but we think that unless you have the Açaí base on its own, the mixture of fruits and nuts would make it difficult to keep carbs down below 20g to maintain ketosis. However, for low carbs dieters, the  Açaí bowl will make a good addition to the daily menu as it serves up less than 100 carbs recommended. In fact, you probably can have it for 2 meals if you want.

All in all, we were quite satisfied with our first Açaí bowl, it will be an easy choice to make as a meal option as it fits perfectly into our diet.
