Dai-ichi Fishmart : Quaint Hole in the Wall Japanese Resturant in the East

Craving for a Japanese meal?

We took the off beaten track and headed to Dai-ichi Fishmart located at The Flow.
Contrary to the namesake, Dai-ichi Fishmart is a dining restaurant rather than a fish mart per se. It has a small corner selling fresh fish, but 95 % of the place is allocated for restaurant purposes.

This cosy hideout reminds me of the hole in the wall Japanese Restaurants you would find on the back alley of Japanese streets albeit a more modern version.  Spreading over 2 floors,  the decor has all the markings of a typical Japanese eatery. Bottles of sake line up the counter-serve to enhance the ambience.

The Menu
What we like are the affordable fares on the menu. There are dishes such as Udon, Ramen and Donburi for one to partake. There are also Bento set meals to enjoy and those come with additional sides like salad, rice and miso soup.

Ramen Dai-Ici Fishmart

We tried the Sho-Yu Ramen and the Chicken Katsubon. The Ramen was not as flavourful as some of the other ramens we had before while the  Katsudon was as good as it comes.

Katsudon

Dai-ichi Fishmart is more well known for its fresh sashimi and grilled meat like Yakitori. We did not get to try it for this time and would be saving it for our next trip down.

Verdict

The restaurant should be able to accommodate about 40 pax at a go with its indoor/outdoor sitting arrangement. It is not a very big spot, so do make a reservation if you are heading down. The good part about this restaurant is that it does not charge a service fee, making it an affordable option if one is looking to have Japanese food. As for the overall quality, we did not have dishes that had our tastebuds hook. It is decent enough for a meal and we have yet to try their signature dishes to make a full recommendation.

The restaurant is located at The Flow mall along East Coast Road. After a meal, you can always hop over next door to Jin Yu Man Tang for Hong Kong Dessert. For under $100 for a family of 4, you could have a decent meal and dessert without breaking the bank.
