Jabra Elite 7 Active Review : Workout companion with a customised sound experience

Hey good looking.

No, we are not talking about us, but the compliments that one would get with the Jabra Elite 7 Active.

The first impression of these earbuds is how rugged looking. Clad in black, it stands out with its unique shape. Unlike the current slew of earbuds with a stalk protruding out of the earbud, the Jabra Elite does not have that 'extra' feature.  Instead, when fitted on the ears, you will literally see just a 'bud'.

Jabra Elite 7 Active Features

Premium Coating

Unlike the plastic feel of other earbuds, the Jabra Elite 7 Active is also clad in rubber, giving it a premium look compared to the rest of the pack. While it looks great, it could potentially be a dust magnet.

Jabra Sound +

Before you start using the earbuds, you have to download Jabra Sound + from either the Apple App Store or Google Play Store

Using the Jabra Sound+ , you would be able to optimise your audio experience as it guides you to fit as well as tune your earbuds to fit your listening profile.

There is a hearing test to create a unique sound profile for your ears. You can also personalise the active noise cancelling (ANC) to target more low or high-frequency noise.

Earbuds control

Jabra Elite 7 Active

The default earbud has buttons on both sides of the earbuds. You can use it to control music playback, answer calls or even launch virtual assistants such as Alexa, Google Assistant (Android) or Siri (Apple).

The default earbud control is as follows

Right Ear

  • Long press - Increase the volume
  • Single press- Start Stop
  • Double press - Next Track
  • Triple press - BackTrack

Left Ear

  • Long press- Decrease volume
  • Single Press- On/Off Hear through
You can also use the Jabara sound  to set up your preferred control mode

USB-C, Wireless and fast charging

Charging the Jabra Sound+ is a breeze. You can opt for USB-C (wire provided) charging, wireless or fast charging.

Battery Life

The battery life is rated with a whopping 8 hours on a single-use and up to 30 hours with the supplied charging case. This would be sufficient for most commutes and even a long flight before the need for charging.

We like the provided case of Jabra. Due to its oval shape with a flat surface, you are able to open it with the cover facing upwards. This is more elegant compared to the other cases as it allows it to stand on its own.

Find my Jabra

You can also activate the Find my Jabra mode on the app. This will store the latest location of the earbuds on the earbuds. This will be useful for those who have a tendency to misplace items. Do note that while the last location is shown, you are not able to activate any tone on the earbuds to help you locate the earbuds. The app only shows the last known address when the earbuds are deactivated.

IP57 Rated

IP57 means that the earbuds are protected against access to hazardous parts and dust protected. IT is also protected against the effects of temporary submersion in water (30 minutes at 3 feet). This makes it a great gym or running companion for most scenarios.

Shakegrip Technology

This provides a secure fit due to the silicone rubber material. You do not require additional fits such as wind tips. We ran and jumped with the earbuds and it stays in place all the time while we did our test. While the fit is great, it may take a few tries to get it fitted right on the ears.

Sound Test

ANC and HearThrough

The Jabra Elite comes with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). You are able to control it via the Jabra Sound+ app on the strength of ANC. You can also personalise the level on the app. For runners, there is also the HearThrough option. This will allow one to be aware of the surroundings as it amplifies environmental noise. This can be controlled on the earbuds.

Mono Sound

You can also activate the mono earbud by placing the unused earbud into the charging case

Sound quality

Overall the vocals are crisp. You can also control the music equalizer via the app. It also comes with 6 music presets as follows

  • Neutral
  • Speech
  • Bass Boost
  • Treble Boost
  • Smooth
  • Energize
While the music equalizer is good, it does not comes with the latest technology such as Spatial sound or 360 reality audio.

Should you buy it?

While the Jabra Elite 7 Active may not have all the features one would like to have on the earbuds, it has sufficient plus points that make it a great companion. If you have an active lifestyle and want something that sounds and looks good, the Jabra Elite 7 Active will fit the bill.

Mint

It comes with a 3 different colour option ( Black, Mint and Navy Blue)
