Singapore will have a new President in 2023

President Halimah Yacob, 68, has just announced that she will not be standing for re-election in the next presidential election.

She took office on September 14, 2017, after an uncontested election due to the lack of eligible candidates. This was due to the election being reserved for ethnic Malays, as there has not been a president from the racial group for the past 5 most recent presidential terms.

The following elected president will not be reserved for minority candidates. Will it mark the return of presidential hopefuls in the last contested election? In the last contested election, Tan Cheng Bok, Tan Jee Say and Tan Kin Lian ran for Presidency. Will this mark the return of the hopefuls or will we see new faces this year?

President Hailmah Yacob had made history as Singapore's first female president. We wish her the best in her future endeavours.
