Soi Thai Kitchen Tampines Review: Your Neighbourhood Thai Food
Craving for Thai Food in the East?
I think we found one if you are looking for authentic Thai Food in the East.
Soi Thai Kitchen is located at Tampines Street 81, a little HDB hub near Temasek Polytechnic.
Nestled under an HDB block, the decor is small and unassuming. There are inside and outside seating areas for diners. In terms of vibes, it is quite similar to the Nakhon Kitchen that we tried in Bedok. We were there early for dinner at 6pm, and the place was quickly filled up.
Food
We ordered four dishes and a dessert for our meal.
Prawn Cakes ( 4 Pieces) $10.7
These regular-size prawn cakes may not be a looker, but they are crispy and tasty. In terms of pricing, it is slightly higher than other variations we had tried in Singapore.
Tom Ka Soup - Seafood $9.7
This Thai coconut soup comes with a good portion of seafood. A slightly spicy and sweet this, this soup is heavier than compared to the regular clear Tom Yum soup.
Premium Fried Pork Cheek $18.42
This is the highlight of our meal. The pork was tender with a touch of crisp for the skin. There are more fats than meat in Pork Cheek, and it can be quite a sinful dish if you are on a diet, but the soft and flavourful taste makes it worth the weekend hour run to burn off the fats.
Thai Yellow Ginger Chicken $11.88
An unassuming dish that mixes Thai flavours with its aromatic scent with a hint of bitterness due to the Ginger.
Red Rudy $3.60
Our dessert is the red rudy. You have to stir it to get the redness out of the dessert. The red rubies are essentially water chestnuts coated with red food colouring. It has a crunchy texture that goes well with the fragrant coconut milk.
Verdict
It is a no-fuss stop for Thai Food here. With dishes that taste authentic at a decent price (no service charge), it is a hidden gem mostly patronised by residents. While it may not be the priceiest, it is not the cheapest. Given the location, we expected it to be a tad less expensive.
On a side note, if you are driving there, do be wary of parking at the multi-storey carpark located at Blk 823A. This is by far the worst carpark design, with an almost 90-degree turn and near-impossible left-to-right turns that put fear into our hearts even before the meal. The numerous scratches on the walls of the ramp attest to that. Thankfully, the good food made up for that.
