Airleo Review : Portable Air Con vs Air Cooler vs AIRLEO

The heat is unbearable!

Singapore is so hot that it can be unbearable to live without cool air, especially with the hot afternoon sun bearing down on you. Even at home, it can be unavoidable to escape the heat. It is projected that it will even be hotter in 2024!

The best way to combat the heat is to switch on the air conditioner, but it will be costly in the long run.

Which brings the question. Should I get a Portable Air Conditioner or Air Cooler to save money?

What is AIRLEO?

To best describe the AIRLEO, you must know that it is NOT a Portable Air Conditioner or an Air cooler. Instead, it is a proprietary personal air-cooling system developed by AIRLEO to provide the effect of air conditioning without the need to install an exhaust hose. It is designed to provide air comfort to a single user rather than to cool the whole room.

First Impression

The AIRLEO has a sleek, minimalist design. While it is boxy, its curvy sides make it more appealing to the eye. 

It is almost as big as an air cooler, but it looks much sleeker in my glossy black version with a hint of gold. As a testimony to its unique design, AIRLEO has won the Singapore Good Design Award 2023 for Product Design.

Installation Free

While I always toyed with getting a portable air conditioner, the hassle of installing one held me back. You would need to install the hose with a portable air conditioner, which could mean sacrificing a window. Unfortunately, my window setup does not allow this (there are only 2 panels opening side by side).

The AIRLEO is a plug-and-play system. It is a hoseless system that adds bonus points to the system. 

Air Conditioner temperature, Air Cooler, electricity bills

The AIRLEO is stated to reduce the temperature by about 7 to 10 degrees below room temperature. This means it is achievable to get around 22-25 degrees ambient temperature on a warm day; on a cool evening, it is equivalent to air conditioning at 24 degrees. 

You could get cooler air by adding topping water to the unit and lowering the temperature by 2 to 3 degrees.

That said, the energy consumption based on laboratory measurements is about 833kW for an 8-hour day use.  This is only a fraction of 4964kW for Portable Airconditioning and 6132kW for split aircon. The price of $0.2998 per kWH translates to $250 for the AIRLEO, $1602 for the Portable Aircon and $1970 for the Split Aircon. 

The savings could quickly pay for an AIRLEO in less than four months. So, technically, you get a 'FREE' unit under Girl Math rules if you purchase and use the AIRLEO instead of air conditioning.

Portability

The AIRLEO comes in a frame and frameless version. We recommend the frame version for three reasons.

Firstly, the frame version has concealed wheels, which allow you to easily move your AIRLEO to any part of the house.

You can use it in the study room, the living room, or even on the balcony or patio. 

This flexibility is not achievable with portable air conditioning.

Secondly, the Frame version will set the AIRLEO taller. This is important, especially when seated, as the cool air comes mainly from a singular outlet.

Lastly, the frame protects your  AIRLEO. Any knocks on the side will be protected. The AIRLEO frameless version starts from $599, and the frame version retails at $699 (As of  10 Apr 2024)

Noise

Before I got the unit, there were online reviews that noise was an issue. The unit I had is pleasantly quiet, like the white noise from the air conditioning units. Compared to an Air Cooler, it is a nightingale.

There is additional noise when the pump is activated, but it is negligible. 

Easy Maintenance

While you must service your air conditioners, the AIRLEO is low maintenance. It is easily washed with snap-on filters.

Extra Functions

The AIRLEO is more than just an energy-efficient cooling system. It also has UVC Sanitisation that eliminates pathogens, bacteria, and viruses. It also comes with ambient light that is perfect to create a relaxing mood.

There are dual USB ports to charge your devices during use.

While it does not come with a remote, it has intelligent controls via the AIRLEO app that acts like a remote control.

These little extras are bonuses. You do not necessarily need them, but they come in handy with the unit.

Limitations

Ventilated Space

Like the Air Cooler, the AIRLEO needs a ventilated space to operate efficiently. It should be placed in front of an open window or door, as hot air expels from the back during operation. 

If you have a space limitation, it may be an issue. It works well on most occasions when I use it.

The Range

1-2 meters might not be enticing to some. While it could be great if the range can be doubled or tripled, you do not need much space as a personal air-cooling system. 

After all, the AIRLEO is meant to cool you down rather than cool the whole room.

Conclusion

If you want to cool the whole room, AIRLEO is not for you. If you intend to get a unit to just cool yourself, enjoy the cold air without busting a hole in your wallet, and have a fuss-free setup, AIRLEO ticks most setup boxes. With soaring inflation, keeping cool at a fraction of the price of the usual air-conditioning is well worth it.
