Black & Ink : Hidden Cosy Cafe in a Landed Enclave

Come with us to this cosy cafe in Swan Lake Ave's heart.

Nestled in the landed enclave of this idyllic estate, Black and Ink is accessible by public transport running on New Upper Changi Road. It is also on the same row of shophouses as the popular Baker and Inn, where we had breakfast a few years back.

Stepping inside, you will be greeted with a spacious interior that seats at least 50 pax for groups of all sizes. 

The interior is accented with an industrial mood, with concrete floors, generous-sized wooden tables, an array of wooden seats, and a big chalkboard wall inviting you to leave a message. 

The space is bigger than the other corner neighbour, and we envision it as a good spot to chill and watch the world go by.

The Food

Black and Ink has an extensive menu. It offers burgers, pizzas, pasta, rice, surf, and turf. According to Google Reviews, the place is popular for its burgers and Char Bowl. Since this was our first time here, we decided to give them a try.

The Legend (S) - $18.90

This burger was created in memory of Jonah Lomu, a New Zealand rugby legend (hence the name). It comes in sizes, and we chose the smaller version. Despite being small,  it's pretty chunky and comes with a side of lettuce or chips.

The thick beef patty can be cooked to your liking. You have cheese, bacon, fried egg, and green between the toasted buns. We could not ask for a better burger at this price.

Smashed Cheesburger (S) $14.90

Two well-done beef patties smashed between slices of cheese and crispy buns is a recipe that goes well with burger fans. The sides of the chips are generous, too. The only improvement would be that the cheese to be melted as per their menu. Regardless, this sinful dish is worth the calories.

Char Bowl (S) $17.90

A well-roasted pork belly with a beautiful egg and achar or on the side is a lovely dish. Paired with Japanese Pearl rice, this Char bowl is as good as it gets. 

Verdict

We love the set-up of Black & Ink in this estate. Heading into the charming estate feels like stepping away from the hustle and bustle of city living. 

In terms of price and quality of the food, it is befitting of a return visit. We noted that there is a brunch menu, and we reckoned that is a good excuse to come back again to try it.
