Yat Ka Yan Review – Traditional Desserts That Hit the Sweet Spot

Nestled within Fortune Centre, Yat Ka Yan has quietly earned a reputation among traditional dessert lovers.

While the mall may be better known for its Japanese izakayas and vegetarian haunts, this humble dessert stall often boasts the longest queue on any given day—and for good reason.

In case you're wondering, Yat Ka Yan (一家人) means “we are family,” and it really lives up to its name. Step inside and you’re greeted with décor straight out of an old-school kopitiam—complete with vintage tiles and a rustic, nostalgic vibe that brings back childhood memories of post-meal sweet treats with the grandparents.

What We Tried

Mini Soup of Three – $6.50
If you're the indecisive sort (like us), this set is your lifesaver. You get to choose three hot desserts in mini portions. We went with Almond Cream, Walnut Paste, and Purple Rice.

The Walnut Paste was the highlight. It's rich, yet not overly dense. The Almond Cream offered a lighter, slightly fragrant contrast, while the Purple Rice was creamy and comforting, like a warm dessert porridge done just right.

Chendol – $4
A classic option. While there is a durian version on the menu, we opted for the original. It came loaded with gula melaka and coconut milk and definitely on the sweeter side. If you’ve got a sugar craving, this will do the trick. For us, it bordered on too sweet, but that’s chendol for you.

Verdict

Despite the snaking queue, don’t be put off. It moves quickly. We got a seat within 10 minutes, and the food arrived shortly after. Pro tip: queue first; they’ll assign you a seat once it's ready.

There’s still a long list of desserts on the menu we’ve yet to try, from yam paste to black sesame soup. Safe to say, if we’re back in the area, Yat Ka Yan is getting another visit.
