Dim Sum Haus Review : Hidden Gem with a Modern Twist at Jalan Besar

Dim sum lovers, here’s one for your radar.

Tucked along the busy stretch of Jalan Besar, home to at least four dim sum eateries including the famous Swee ChoonDim Sum Haus may not be the first name that comes to mind. But don’t let its quiet presence fool you. This unassuming eatery could very well be the dark horse in the dim sum scene.

Serving up traditional dim sum with a creative twist, the menu at Dim Sum Haus features familiar bites elevated with unique flavours and presentation.

Atmosphere

Dim Sum Haus is nestled in a row of shophouses, just steps from Jalan Besar MRT. It’s easy to walk past if you’re not looking out for the signboard. Inside, the space is compact but comfortable, with enough room for small groups.

The decor is simple, blending old-school tiles with modern furnishings, mirroring the concept behind the food: a nostalgic base with fresh updates.

What We Ate

We may have over-ordered for two, but no regrets here. Here’s what we tried:

Century Egg with Finer ($3.20)
Smooth and not overly pungent. A gentle way to ease into the meal.
grispy Shrimp and Mango Roll ($6.10)
A refreshing contrast—the sweet mango adds a light twist to the savoury shrimp.

Steamed Crispy Rice Roll with Shrimp ($6.80)
I’m usually not a fan of steamed roll, but this was an exception. It's light, fluffy and a delight in every bite.
Twin Swan – Togetherness ($5.80)
Honestly, we ordered this for the Instagram-worthy presentation. But the yam filling turned out to be a smooth, delicious surprise.

geriyaki Siew Mai ($7.80)
Served on sticks. My partner loved the fusion flavours, though I preferred the more traditional bites.
Steamed Charcoal Chicken and Shrimp Dumpling ($5.50)
Visually striking with a hint of smoky charcoal, this dumpling delivered on both looks and taste.
Fried Fresh Shrimp Bean Curd Skin ($5.30)
One of the highlights. Soft and steamed inside, crispy outside. A unique two-texture dim sum that worked wonderfully.
Stir-Fried Carrot Cake with X.O. Sauce ($8.90)
Generous portion and rich in flavour. Great for sharing—and quite filling too.

Drinks

Chrysanthemum Tea ($1.90)
Light and floral. Was expecting a pot as per the photo, but it came as a cup.

Iced Lychee Jasmine Tea ($4.40)
Sweet and refreshing; perfect for dim sum.

Verdict

We probably ordered more than we should have for two people, but with the total bill coming in just over $60, it still felt like great value. The food quality was consistently high, and the creative spins on classics made the experience enjoyable from start to finish.

Tip: They close by 8.30pm for dinner, so plan to arrive early. We did, and we’re glad for it!

If you're looking for something different from the usual dim sum haunts, Dim Sum Haus is worth checking out. It may just be Jalan Besar's most underrated dim sum spot.
