LimCha (林茶) Teahouse : A Hidden Traditional Teahouse for Tea Lovers at East Coast Road

Ever since our trip to Taiwan and our experience of tea in Jiufen, we’ve missed the charm of a proper teahouse.

In Singapore, Bubble Tea are aplenty but traditional Tea Houses are rare, but we stumbled upon one along East Coast Road, LimCha (林茶) Teahouse.

Located on the second floor of a row of shophouses directly opposite i12 Katong, it’s not the easiest place to find.

A small sign leads you into a narrow passageway, followed by a steep staircase that takes you up to the teahouse.

Inside, the space is simple yet cosy, with wooden tables, chairs, and touches of teahouse décor like false roof tiles. You even get to choose your tea flavour by smelling the leaves before making a decision.

The Tea
LimCha offers both hot teas and cold brews.

The hot tea reminded us most of Taiwan. Served in a pot, you can choose from four flavours – Ya Shi Xiang Dancong, Orchid Vanilla Dancong, Cinnamon Fragrance Dancong, or Almond Fragrance Dancong. A set for two costs $35 and comes with light refreshments, while single pots are available without snacks.

It’s a little pricey, but the experience of drinking tea the traditional way makes up for it.

The cold brew teas are another highlight. These come in a takeaway cup topped with a small detachable teapot lid that doubles as a souvenir,  a fun touch that makes it stand out.

The Desserts
We tried two desserts alongside the tea.

  • LimCha’s Signature Orh Nee

Smooth taro purée blended with cream, fragrant and comforting.
  • Five Blessings Douhua

Silky soybean pudding topped with grass jelly, taro balls, roasted peanuts, red beans, and glutinous rice.

Both were unique and different from the usual traditional desserts you’d find elsewhere.

Verdict

LimCha (林茶) is a small and cosy spot, perfect for a quiet afternoon or evening tea session. The tea brings back memories of Taiwan, while the desserts make it a little different from your typical teahouse.

We will be back, but climbing the steps will be a challenge for older folks.
