The East is the best.
Ok that is a bias statement. We had been Easterners since birth and it would be no surprise that we simply love the East. That said, for someone living around the East Coast, this is actually our first visit to a iconic joint in the East - Mel's Place Bar and Bistro located at Kuo Chuan Road. Kuo Chuan Road may be an unfamiliar name even to Easterners, so for direction purpose, Mel's Place is located near the junction between Still Road and East Coast Road.
Given that we had pass by this place countless of time, it was with eager anticipation that we accepted the invitation for Sunday Brunch.

How do we describe Mel's Place?
For those familiar with East Coast eateries, most of it is housed in the old style Peranakan shop-houses with air conditioned comforts. Mel's Place is a breath of fresh air with lush greenery abound its vicinity standing on a plot on its own.

There is an outdoor al fresco area, a shaded area as well as indoor air condition comfort. Mel's Place would not no problem fitting a party of 150 Pax in on its premises, making it an ideal birthday party spot

As part of it's efforts to be family friendly, there is a Bouncy castle set up for kids during Sunday Brunch.

The boys thought it was a great idea judging from the numerous times they slide down the castle. We heard from the management that more activities are in the pipeline for kids in the future. So it is definitely heading towards the direction of being a family friendly destination.

If playing outdoors gets a tad too hot, you might like to utilize the pool table in the shaded area.

For those who melts under the heat, there is a cool indoor spot as well. We do feel al fresco is the way to go if you are heading for Brunch at Mel's place. Since I am a scorpion, I place atmosphere high on the list when I eat out. Mel's place hits the mark as a laid back, relax and family restaurant.

Since we are there for Brunch , it is only natural that we talk about food.There is a special menu set aside for brunch. Curently they are serving 10 main course, 3 desserts and 3 kids items. In addition, you can order heir signature pizzas while you are there.

We had tried a few dishes at Mel's Palce. If we had our way, we would have sample the whole dishes on the menu since it looked irresitable. Alas, our stomach could not take up the mammoth task.

The kids had their sight on the Big Breakfast. A complete plate with chicken cheese sausage, sunny side up eyes, grilled tomatoes , toast and bacon strips, it was hard to resist. The servings was sufficient to feed two hungry boys.
As for taste, it is as yummy as it should be since the boys gleefully finished up their portions.

I have a confession to make... I have not eaten black burger before till Mel's brunch burger. I did have my reservations biting it, but after the first bite, it's crunchiness won me over.
With grilled chicken breast, bacon, egg, fresh onion , romaine lettuce, tomato ring , mayonnaise and fries; you will be full after finishing the plate.

If you want something light, try their signature pancakes . Coated with chocolate Nutella ( kids love this ) , salted caramel, banana and strawberries, it a dish for the health conscious.

If you are still hungry after all these food, order their in house thin crust gourmet pizza. The pizza is great for sharing for 2 to 3 persons and would complement the Sunday Brunch.
For kids specific menu, there is the Chicken Nuggets with Fries, Chicken Pasta with tomato sauce and Baguette with chicken cheese sausage and French fries. Best of all, every main course ordered will entitle to one free kids meal. If your child fancy something from the main menu, we are told that they might even have mini versions of the dishes for selected course. Do ask the staff to find out more.

With fine food and good ambiance , Mel's place is the perfect place to chill regardless if you are there for lunch, dinner or brunch!

Unfortunately the boys are a tad too young to join me for a mug of Guinness Draught while watching soccer. Another 10 years more perhaps?

The Verdict
Great place to chill, family friendly activities for Sunday Brunch, fine food at a reasonable price means we will be back!
