The Phantom of the Opera : Review (Singapore 2019)

The Phantom of the Opera is here...

What is The Phantom of the Opera

The world' most popular musical needs no introduction. Andrew Lloyd Webber most famous and iconic musical is the most successful in the entertainment industry. Playing to over 145 million people in 150 cities across 30 countries, this longest-running show on Boardway has won over 70 major awards. Celebrating its 30th year anniversary in 2018, it marks its return to Singapore since 2013.

In case, you are hiding under a rock, The Phantom of the Opera tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known as 'The Phantom' who haunts the depths of Paris Opera House. During this time, he was mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano - Christine. He lures her to be his protege and seeks her love in return. Yet, when Christine showed love for her long lost interest Raoul, the Phantom's obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn where jealousy, passions and madness combust into an epic tale of love.

Why you should watch the show?

If you are debating if you should watch this classic, here are 5 reasons why you should not hesitate.

  • The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber

Live Orchestra
Andrew Lloyd Webber is undoubtedly one of the best, if not the most well known musical theatre composer of all time. With 13 musicals under his belt and numerous awards, his songs are legendary. The Phantom of The Opera has one of the most memorable songs on the musical circuits with classics like 'The Phantom of the Opera', 'The Music of the Night' and 'Angel of Music' to serenade you for the evening.

The full piece 11 strong international live orchestra does justice to his works.

  • The outstanding cast performances

Jonathan Roxmouth shone as the imposing Opera Ghost - The Phantom with the perfect baritone vocals. His presence on stage was both riveting and formidable, striking a sense of fear into the hearts of the audience.

Meghan Picerno showed her pitch-perfect soprano range as Christine. Her moments of vulnerability shone through her emotional rendition of 'Angel of Music' While Matt Leisy added spice to the chemistry as Christine's lover, Raoul. A gentle and kinder contrast to the ever-demanding Phantom.

The three main lead was sparkling in their performance. From intimate moments between the Phantom and Christine during the challenging duet of 'The Phantom of the Opera' to Raoul and Christine sharing a tender moment with their rendition of 'All I ask of You'.

Look out for the opera scenes that featured the other cast such as the talented Carlotta Giudicelli with that amazing opera range!

  • The Set and Costume
Masquerade
The epic 'Masquerade' rendition brought the full cast into one scene. This magnificent scene showcased the outlandish costumes of The Phantom Of the Opera. No efforts were spared to create the signature Masquerade ball on stage.
To the Phantom Liar
The standout scene for us would be the scene where Christie was bought on a boat through the misty river to the Phantom sanctuary. Seeing it in person would amplify it more than any words.

  • Perfect Date Night Musical
The Phantom was beautifully written filled with a mixed bag of emotions. From love to betrayal to sacrifice. This was the ultimate love story. Growing up with this musical had made me seen the performance in a different light. Having seen half of my life passed since my first encounter with the Phantom, re-watching it made me feel that true love exists in many forms. Regardless if this is your first date, your anniversary night, or a simple date night with the wife, the Phantom of the Opera makes the perfect Date musical to watch with your loved ones.

  • At your doorsteps

The first time I watched The Phantom of the Opera, I had to travel 10840 km to London to catch the show. Today, thanks for Base Entertainment, it is on our doorsteps just mere minutes away at the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands. With a world-class musical at your backyard, it would be a breeze to catch it while it's in town.

What's our thought?

Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savour each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night

I remembered my first time watching The Phantom of the Opera. It was 16 years ago in London. It was the maiden musical with my girlfriend. It was supposed to be the epitome of the perfect date, a romantic musical at a famed West End Theatre.  Alas jet lag got the better of me and sleep engulfed me on the second half of the show (it was immediately after  16 hours flight)

It was regrettable that we could not enjoy the whole show. Nonetheless, in 2007,  I managed to watch the show in Singapore with the same woman who is now my wife. It was a momentous occasion graced by the world's most intimate musical. One that would remain firmly rooted in my mind. This time around, the boys were given the same treatment at the Premiere.
The Cast of The Phantom of the Opera

As a testimonial to the show, I found myself singing along during the performance to music that are now familiar to me. From 'The Phantom of the Opera' to 'Angel of Music' to 'All I ask of You'. These classics are beautiful music of the night.  The lyrics from the song Music of the Night perfectly summed up the emotions I felt when watching the show. This was the third time I had caught The Phantom, yet it was only now that I finally grasp and appreciate the whole story. Every word was intoxicating, every sight a sensation to savour.

To the older generations who grew up on a cocktail of wonderful Musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Les Miserables, this production ranks high on the list of must-watch musicals. To the younger generations, it is a beautiful introduction to the world of musicals and would likely get you to hook on future productions. With a fantastic cast and a grandiose set, The Phantom of the Opera will awe inspiring musical to watch.

Who is it for?

This is a date night musical. Couples both young and old would appreciate the show. As the show has a more mature storyline, it will be more suitable for older children (age 10 and above) if you intend to watch the show with kids. That said, it is the perfect musical to go to for date nights.

When will it be showing?
Sands Theatre
The Phantom of the Opera will be in town from 24 April to 8 June at the Sands Theatre @ Marina Bay Sands. The show is about 2 hours 40 minutes long with a 15 minutes interval.

For the best seats in the house, we recommend getting a seat on the centre or left side (facing the stage). There are more scenes leaning on the right side of the stage and you might be blocked off if you are seated on the right.
