Iphone 12 HDR Videos Compatability issues: Turn it off!

If you are using HDR to film on iPhone 12 models, read this.

First of all, congrats on your swanky new phone. The iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro max is touted as having one of the best cameras in town. For content creators, it means the possibility of ditching the chunky camera for the phone as a replacement. The 12 series can even shoot Hollywood video quality with HDR and Dolby Vision.

This sounds like a dream come true... until we took a video, uploaded to youtube and BAM ,  reality hits.

Instead of the crisp images, you see on the phone, you get to see a blurry whitewash image on your computer screen. The videos you took on HDR can only be viewed on iPhones with HDR functions. On any other devices that do not have HDR, it will look like you have taken the video with a 2010 iPhone 4 (which coincidentally look like the iPhone 12)

This is how you think the video will look like.

This is how people on laptops or non supported device will see.

Horrors!

To save yourself this hassle of people complaining that your video sucks, do the following on your iPhone 12 now.

1) Open Settings > Camera > Record Video

2) Toggle HDR Video off

or

Open Settings >Camera > Formats> Choose Most Compatible

The latter will also turn HDR. In addition, it will also save video files using less space.

Until the rest of the platforms catches up, that crisp and clear HDR video is only good for your own consumption.
