The Coastal Settlement Review : A Nostalgic Experience

Where are we?

On the way to The Coastal Settlement, we had to pass by Changi Prison and even made a wrong turn to the infamous abandoned Changi Hospital. The journey there was itself an adventure.

The Coastal Settlement: Journey to the Past

When we finally reached The Coastal Settlement, it was as if we had been transported to the Twilight Zone.

It was magical when we were there for dinner, and the sun was setting, creating a vintage vibe at The Coastal Settlement.

Nestled discreetly in the East of Singapore, the Coastal Settlement is a hidden gem that whisks you back in time. The Vintage Silver caravan, a rare sight in Singapore, greets you at the entrance.

A retro BMW and the iconic Volkswagen Bettle are flanking it on both sides. The latter was dressed in the hippy colours of the 60s. This set the stage for an oldie experience.

Entering the colonial building, once Block 20 Changi Camp housing the Royal Air Force, you're enveloped in a theme that echoes through every corner.

From Vespa-lined walls to vintage electronics on display, the ambience at The Coastal Settlement is unmistakable. It's not just a restaurant; it's a haven for vintage enthusiasts, doubling as a mini museum adorned with retro memorabilia, paintings, and antique furniture.

Oldies are played in the background, adding to the nostalgic mood.

While Coastal Settlement has raved for its brunch, we were there when the sunset. In terms of atmosphere, it is more enchanting at night.

As for the food, this was what we had.

Ribeye Mac & Cheese

We indulged in a chargrilled Angus Ribeye complemented by a creamy Mac & Cheese side, accompanied by onion rings and broccolini. The steak was cooked Medium rare and was tender. While not bursting with anticipated flavours, it offers a satisfying chewiness.

Wagyu Cheese Burger

We sunk our teeth into a substantial 180g Wagyu Burger hugged by layers of lettuce, maple-glazed bacon, smoked ketchup dijonnaise, and melted cheese. Its juicy and flavourful taste is evident with every bite, though a side of fries would have elevated the experience further.

Grilled Lamb Rack

Our New Zealand mini lamb rack was cooked to a pleasant medium texture. Its chewiness is balanced with easy digestibility, adorned with fine beans and buttered oatmeal, and finished with a refreshing mint yoghurt dressing and basil oil.

TCS Baby Bay Ribs

These Apple Cider glazed BBQ baby ribs boast a tender and sweet flavour profile. This dish is delightful and served generously with thick-cut fries and coleslaw.

Oreo Mud Pie

A decent pie topped with berries compote and served with chocolate and vanilla ice cream.

Verdict

We love the atmosphere here. That said, dining here costs a pretty penny, and the decent food could have been more spectacular.

Despite that and the distance from civilisation, there was quite a crowd on a Monday evening.

The unique ambience is the key draw for The Coastal Settlement. Besides family dining, this place would be great for corporate events or weddings. The only downside is that the parking is limited, and you might end up parking in the former Changi Hospital.

We would love to be back. Next time, we will have brunch instead.
