Sydney Fish Market – Your Last Chance to Visit the Original?

A Farewell Visit to a Sydney Icon...

The original Sydney Fish Market has long been a beloved stop for both tourists and locals. But change is on the horizon. With the new Sydney Fish Market expected to open later this year just across the bay, this could be your last chance to soak in the authentic charm of the original before it becomes a part of history.

Getting There

Getting to the market is easy with Sydney’s Light Rail network. Just hop on the L1 Dulwich Hill Line and alight at the Fish Market Station. From there, it’s a short walk past a carpark to the main entrance.

The Experience

The building itself isn't huge, but it holds a certain nostalgic appeal. The faint scent of fresh seafood greets you as you approach—like a prelude to the feast ahead.

Inside, you’ll find a row of seafood vendors and restaurants offering everything from live lobsters to freshly shucked oysters.

We picked Nicholas Seafood for our seafood fix, settling on a hearty seafood platter and classic fish and chips.

The food was decent and the highlight was having a meal here while we still can.

There are plenty of other options for those keen to explore.

Seating is available both indoors and outdoors. We chose to dine al fresco, enjoying the sun and views of the waterfront. Just across the water stands the new Sydney Fish Market, its sleek, modern roofline rising above the harbour.

While impressive, it doesn’t quite match the laid-back, gritty charm of the original. At first glance, it resembles another shopping complex rather than a bustling fish market.

Verdict

With the new market slated to open soon, the original Sydney Fish Market is likely living out its final chapter. If you’ve never been, this is the time to go. Enjoy a fresh seafood meal, soak in the unique atmosphere, and say goodbye to one of Sydney’s classic landmarks before it’s swept away by time and tide.
