Mel's Place Review: Dine Under the Stars on East Coast Road

Mel's Place on the East Coast is an iconic restaurant at the corner of Still Road and East Coast Road.

This stretch of East Coast road has seen a mini-revival, with eateries popping up throughout the years. You will find a good mix of restaurants at shophouses next to Mel's Place, from the nostalgic Chin Mee Chin Confectionary to the popular Doong Ji Resturant and the newcomer Creamier Handcrafted Ice Cream and Coffee.

Mel's Place stands out in its vast outdoor space. Here, you can dine under the stars, a rarity on this part of the street.

It offers both indoor and outdoor seating. We thought being indoors on a hot afternoon would be a better choice, but nothing beats eating al fresco on this busy street in the evening.

There are also TV and billiard tables for outdoor entertainment. It is also a good place to catch some weekend football with mates and a couple of booze.

We simply love this idyllic setting that you can still enjoy despite the hustle and bustle outside.

The Food

Since Mel's Place is known as Placece to Chill, the food selection may differ from your Michelin Star quality. Rather, this place has a select place for comfort food that is befitting its premises.

The food fare comprises bar bites, burgers, pizzas, pasta and Asian food.

Mel's Chicken Wings

To kick off, we opt for their signature Mel's Chicken Wings.

These wings were crispy and flavourful and made a great starter dish.

Mel's Cheezyburger

The Mel's Cheezyburger looks perfect with a juicy beef patty, perfectly fried egg, cheddar cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and onions. It came with a side of fries and salad. This dish is perfect if you have kids.

Rack of Lamb

The Rack of lamb is presented with mashed potatoes, mixed salad, corn on the cob, and mint sauce. The lamb itself was tender and decent.

Spaghetti Carbonara

While this dish looks simple, it was well cooked. The fresh cream sauce with bacon, onions, parmesan cheese, and runny egg yolks perfectly combines spaghetti carbonara.

Verdict

The food here is surprisingly good. While it does not do magic in your mouth, being in an open space while having a chill meal under the stars is not something you can do in most places. Pricing is also relatively reasonable and comparable to the surrounding restaurants. The ambience is probably Mel's Place's unbeaten advantage in drawing in crowds.

There is also ample parking beside Mel's Place on Kuo Chuan Ave. Your parking is refundable if you spend more than $100 on a single bill (terms and conditions apply).

If you want a place to chill and relax on East Coast Road, Mel's Place is the place to be.
